Fish the Jacksonville Beach Pier
It’s a local icon only 11 miles and 20 minutes east of Seven Pines, directly on Jacksonville Beach. The photo ops are reason enough to stroll its quarter-mile length above blue-green Atlantic waters, but the fishing scene is legit. Bring rods and tackle or rent it all here. Your admission charge also takes care of the necessary fishing license. Don’t want to fish? A different admission fee allows you to just enjoy the vistas and fresh air.
Located at 503 1st Street North in Jacksonville Beach
Topgolf Jacksonville
Who says you need a golf course to enjoy golfing fun? Even better, this location of the popular driving range-entertainment venue is only a few miles northwest of Seven Pines in St. Johns Town Center, across Interstate 295.
The three-level complex with more than 100 weather-protected bays will have you and yours honing your swings (or learning how to) in no time. Once you empty the ball bucket, tackle a 14-hole mini-course, or grab food and drink at the on-site restaurant and bar.
Have clubs? Bring them. Don’t? Use Topgolf’s at no charge.
Located at 10531 Brightman Boulevard in Jacksonville.
Jacksonville Beach Golf Club
If you do want to play golf, how about doing so at one of Jacksonville’s longtime public courses? That’s only 12 blocks from the Atlantic Ocean?
Here’s another sporting adventure that’s an easy drive from Seven Pines, again in nearby Jacksonville Beach. Its namesake public course dates to 1960 and has seen numerous upgrades and renovations, including the most recent in 2009.
Now it’s one of Golf Digest’s top 30 courses in Florida. There’s also a driving range, camps, clinics and instruction available. Book tee times online.
Located at 605 Penman Road South in Jacksonville Beach.
Go surfing
Jacksonville has produced many champion surfers over the decades and its surf culture is alive and well up and down metro area beaches. Visit surf shops in Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach for gear and how-to guidance.
Ask shop proprietors for recs on surfing instructors and camps. Kids’ summer surf camps are plentiful at Atlantic coast hot spots like Jacksonville Beach and New Smyrna Beach much farther south. And there’s likely a camp or series of lessons available for adults too.
Don’t forget to query Seven Pines neighbors or post the question on a virtual community bulletin board. You might discover a veteran surfer, or several, down the street.
